Safety First For Car Insurance Customers

Research from a car insurance comparison website shows that 30 per cent of UK motorists are putting off repairs to their vehicles in order to save money in what could be an expensive mistake.

With winter driving conditions proving hazardous, it is one of the most important times of the year to ensure your vehicle is running correctly or you could end up making an expensive car insurance claim. However, 23 per cent of motorists admitted that if their car developed a problem tomorrow they would still drive it and put off repairs for financial reasons. A further 17 per cent admitted to having delayed replacing worn out tyres, while six per cent have ignored problems with their brakes.

While holding back on getting repairs can seem like a financial risk worth taking, it can prove to be a false economy if you're involved in an accident and need to make a claim on your car insurance.

If you keep your car roadworthy you're much less likely to have an accident. By avoiding a car insurance claim you can continue to earn a no-claims bonus and at the very least you avoid paying out for the policy excess. So saving you a few pounds now could actually cost you far more in the long run - particularly if your insurer deems that you have been negligent for not carrying out the necessary repairs.

Drivers looking to save money should instead review their car insurance policies. There is money to be saved if you park your car in a garage overnight, enhance the security of your car, pay your premiums annually instead of monthly or add a more experienced motorist to a policy as a named driver.

It's also worth shopping around for car insurance at renewal time. Most insurers offer their cheapest deals to new customers and by using a comparison website to compare car insurance you can be sure you're getting a competitive quote. It may even save you enough cash to pay for those repairs and give you peace of mind.
