Could Bikers Harm Your Car Insurance?

As thousands of bikers dust off their motorcycles with spring in the air, it is car drivers that need to be on the lookout.

Motorists need to be more vigilant for bikes as many grow used to not having them around. There are around 1.6million motorcycles in the UK and riders are very much under threat from other road users because fewer than 20 per cent of all motorcycle accidents that involve another party are wholly or partly the biker's fault, according to the AA.

Being involved in an accident with a motorcyclist could have a serious affect on your car insurance premiums, not to mention the damage it could cause to the motorcycle and the biker.

Any accident involving another motor vehicle must be reported to an insurer. If a claim is necessary you could wipe out your no-claims discount and even if you haven't built up a bonus already your renewals could increase significantly.

So what should motorists do to avoid these expensive car insurance claims?

The key is to be aware that motorcyclists are out there and to be extra vigilant. When turning on to a main road, be sure to look in both directions and look again as you are turning. Check your side mirrors regularly while driving and watch out for bikers that may weave their way through stationary traffic. Always check your blind spot before making lane changes as you may not spot a motorcyclist until it is too late. Think about your speed and road position and make sure you use your lights appropriately so you can see and be seen.

If you have made a car insurance claim in the past and are facing high premiums, don't panic. Shop around for cheap car insurance online with a comparison website and you may find more comprehensive cover for less.
